PreGym (preschool children)

A parent assisted gym program for early walkers to four year olds.

The program is carefully designed by all instructors to ensure that motor, cognitive, social and emotional learning occurs in an enjoyable way. All classes aim to develop basic co-ordination, balance, spatial and body awareness in an environment that promotes socialization.

Equipment specific to preschool gymnastics and modified Olympic apparatus are used in each session. Children learn through repetition therefore, a similar layout and class format is used for two weeks to consolidate skills. Each fortnight, different apparatus and circuits are set up to ensure that children are stimulated by a variety of sources on a regular basis.  Equipment used throughout each term in most programs include bars, beams, trampolines, ropes, balls, parachutes and other hand apparatus.

PreGym is a structured program which also incorporates some exploratory play. Themes accompany the program to make the learning experience even more enjoyable.  Examples of some themes in the program include jungle animals, dinosaurs, grand prix and under the sea. Art activities may also be coupled with the program in line with the themes giving children a variety of stimuli during the class.

The teachers Emma and Bec of my son  (Jordan, 4yo) have been fantastic. They have really taken him under their wings to help with his development. In addition to the physical, social and enjoyment benefits of the class, there are so many practical skills he is learning like listening, following instructions, sitting in a group, lining up and waiting for others.

Competitive Gymnastics

Competitive classes are available for gymnasts who have progressed through the Recreational Levels.

Pre-Squad (Non-Competitive)

The first step towards becoming a competitive gymnast.

What is Pre-Squad?

A 1.5 hour class for gymnasts with determination, increased skill development showing signs of the strength and flexibility required for full body control that want to improve and possibly start competing within the sport.

Why is it important?

To teach gymnasts a foundation of skills and body shapes, build strength, develop body control and spatial awareness and create a willingness to learn while introducing competition etiquette and respect for the sport and those involved.

Who will be in the class and who will be coaching?

Gymnasts of similar age and ability all working towards a common goal of moving into a competitive squad. The coach will be a qualified gymnastics coach with a sound knowledge of skills, drills and coaching methods to ensure each gymnast is improving to the best of their abilities in a safe and structured environment.

When will a gymnast advance to a competitive squad?

Once a gymnast is successfully demonstrating a variety of skills, showing that they are willing to put in the hard work and determination required and mentally ready to attend competitions the coach will arrange for them to move classes, this may be on a different day with the possibility of a different coach.

Squad (Competitive)

This is a competitive program that provides the gymnast with the opportunity to grow their gymnastics skills and focus strongly on their technique and execution including acrobatic movements and aerial awareness.

Throughout the year GymStar hold competitions for gymnasts to enter. GymStar Competitions focus on participation and teamwork, as well as individual and team achievements and skill development.

Competitions for Berwick Gymnasts are in no way compulsory, but are highly encouraged.

Classes are available Monday to Friday evenings and Saturday mornings.
